'I don't make movies for money!' says Imtiaz Ali
Love Aaj Kal has topped the box office charts running houseful at nearly every cinema possible, on all the shows, on all the days.
So what is the end of this story? Money! Money! Money! For Imtiaz Ali. And when the craze for Love Aaj Kal dies out, Imtiaz Ali will start counting that money. So when a local news agency interviewed the director, here is what he said about all that money.
“Yes, money is important, but that has never been my driving factor for making a film. If that was the case I would have chosen to do multiple films a year. My passion is cinema... money will follow.†Now you can choose to believe this statement or you may discard it as rubbish. Especially since Imtiaz Ali goes on to say something that slightly contradicts what he said above.
“No one has approached me with a 10-crore offer yet. I'm still awaiting for such a price tag to be attached to my name.†Ali laughed when asked if he has entered the '10 crore league'.
So then would you consider Imtiaz Ali a filmmaker with only a monetary outlook towards films? Well, to make that decision, one must know every side of the story, right? Imtiaz started off with Socha Na Tha, which was critically acclaimed, but a box office failure. So no money there, yet good cinema. Then came Jab We Met, which was critically acclaimed, started off very slowly, but did make money at the BO. Again - good cinema, worthy profits.
And now he's hit the screens with Love Aaj Kal. Critically acclaimed – Yes; Monetary profits - hell yes! So then maybe Imtiaz Ali has found that thin line of good cinema with profitable returns.
